Welcome to Sungardens Hospice

Sungardens Hospice offers a programme of specialized, palliative care to our patients with progressive, far advanced, incurable disease.

We also offer support to their families. The majority of out-patients are visited in their homes by experienced, specially trained nursing staff.

We offer this service to communities in the Pretoria area (which includes Mamelodi). Please see the list of areas that we operate in. We are a non-profit organization and receive 95% of our funding from corporate donors, sponsorships, donations as well as income generated by our charity shops.

Hospice recognises dying as a normal process and neither hastens or postpones death. We recognise grief as a normal response to loss and support the families during the bereavement period. (Please read Myths about Hospice). Any patient (with their consent) with progressive, far advanced, incurable disease: Cancer, HIV/AIDS, end stage cardiac failure etc. can make use of our services.

*No one will ever be turned away due to their inability to pay for our services.*

Charity Shops

Our shops form an integral part of our fundraising effort. The income generated from these sales enables us to provide professional care to persons who are terminally ill and is responsible for almost 50% of our total income of the year.

We attract all types of customers. Some love a bargain, others might not have a large clothing budget and then there are those regulars, seeking vintage items.

Do you have any second hand clothing, books, wool, material or other household goods that you no longer have a use for? Most of the children`s clothing is not sold, but passed on to our younger patients. At the moment we have a shortage of household goods for the white elephant shop. This includes, old cups, mugs, plates, vases, plastic ware, ornaments and cutlery.

Clothing Shop

This establishment started from humble beginnings at a private home in Garsfontein in a container and was eventually moved to our current premises when the amount of donated goods increased substantially.

Bookshop

Our bookshop is reckoned to be one of the top 5 secondhand book shops in South Africa.

Hospice receives donated books from the public, sorts them according to quality and quantity and, after pricing, arranges stock in library format.

White Elephant

The donations requested relate to Home Furniture & Appliances; Office Furniture & Equipment, Antiques, Fine Art Collectibles and other collectable items.

About Us

Pretoria Sungardens Hospice was founded by Shelagh Lahoud and subsequently established in 1987, and Mamelodi Hospice in 1994. These hospices were established out of a need that existed in the community to take care of terminally ill patients.
