Myths about Hospice
Once admitted to the Hospice In patient Unit you will not return home.
Patients are not just admitted to the In Patient Unit for terminal care. In the In Patient Unit we also admit patients for pain and symptom control and for respite (rest period for patients and their families). When patients` pain and symptoms are controlled they are discharged home in the care of the Palliative Care trained Home Based Care Sister.
2009 – 2010: 36 % of the patients who are admitted to the In Patient Unit actually went back home again.
Only the aged/elderly is admitted to the In Patient Unit and cared for at their homes.
Palliative Care is rendered to all individuals diagnosed with a terminal illness irrespective of gender, culture, nationality or age. We have individuals of all ages on our program.
Our youngest patient is 10 months old.
Between January and May 2010 we treated 88 patients between the ages of 18 and 35.
Between January and May 2010 we treated 123 patients between the ages of 36 and 45.
