Since its establishment in 1994, Mamelodi Palliative Care has been a beacon of hope for individuals and families facing life-threatening illnesses. As a satellite branch of Sungardens, our mission is to provide specialised home-based palliative care, ensuring that patients receive comfort, dignity, and support during their final stages of illness.

A Commitment to Compassionate Care

At Mamelodi Palliative Care, we believe that every individual deserves quality care, regardless of financial circumstances. Our services are entirely free of charge, making sure that no patient is ever turned away due to an inability to pay. Patients are typically referred to us by doctors, hospitals, or family members, and when possible, medical aid funds are utilised before they are exhausted.

Our focus extends beyond medical care. We offer emotional and social support to both patients and their families, ensuring that their lives remain meaningful and comfortable. We recognise dying as a natural process and strive to help families and individuals find mental and spiritual peace during this difficult time.

Serving the Community

Currently, we care for between 220 and 250 patients at any given time, many of whom are in the final stages of HIV/AIDS. Our work goes beyond just the patients; we also provide vital support to their families. Many children in these households are either living with HIV/AIDS themselves or have been orphaned due to the disease. These children often remain in the care of unemployed grandparents or relatives, adding an extra layer of hardship.

Through donations and partnerships, Mamelodi Palliative Care helps provide food, schooling assistance, and recreational activities for these families. Whenever funds permit, we distribute food parcels and collaborate with other organisations to arrange outings for the children and their caregivers.

Challenges in Palliative Care

Providing palliative care in a community faced with high levels of poverty and a lack of education presents significant challenges. Many individuals do not fully understand the nature of palliative care, leading to misconceptions and resistance to such services. A lack of education also means that caregivers in the home often struggle with basic medical and hygiene practices, making it difficult to ensure a stable and healthy environment for patients.

Additionally, there is a lack of ownership and accountability within some households, where family members are either unwilling or unable to participate in the care of their loved ones. This places an even greater burden on palliative care workers, who must step in to provide support while navigating complex family dynamics. Ensuring compliance with medication schedules, proper nutrition, and emotional support can be extremely challenging when caregivers in the home are absent or uninvolved.

Despite these difficulties, our team remains dedicated to raising awareness about palliative care and working closely with families to improve their understanding and engagement. Community education programmes and partnerships with local organisations play a crucial role in bridging these gaps and ensuring that every patient receives the care they need.

Daycare and Social Support

For those patients who are still mobile and able to engage with others, we run a weekly daycare programme. Participants receive medical check-ups, a nutritious meal, and an opportunity to socialise, fostering a sense of community and belonging. These sessions not only offer medical benefits but also uplift the spirits of our patients, ensuring they experience companionship and joy despite their illnesses.

Building a Caring Community

With HIV/AIDS remaining a major health challenge, our integrated home and community-based care programme is more essential than ever. We work closely with charities, churches, schools, and local communities to extend our reach and impact. Our mission extends beyond palliative care—we aim to nurture and support children and youth from impoverished backgrounds, offering them opportunities to improve their quality of life through targeted programmes and projects.
